1.2.3. How to Catch a Chicken at Lightspeed

Hey there— Alex here,

The hardest thing I’ve had to learn as a business owner is knowing when to just CHILL THE FUCK OUT.

There are lots of highs & lows in this business. Some days, weeks, and even months can be very scary.

It has taken me years to be able to calmly weather most of the storms that come my way. And sometimes, admittedly, I still freak out.

Here’s what I learned though… The trick isn’t just hiding under a pillow and waiting for the storm to pass, but to learn to tame the storm of emotion that arises within me and clouds my judgment when shit hits the fan.

Controlling emotions is like trying to catch a chicken that’s going lightspeed. (I have caught a chicken going normal speed and that was hard enough.) It’s hard to take a moment, stop, and realize that YOU might be making things worse. When things get bad, it can be easy to start spiraling.

Shit happens, but a lot of good things happen too.

It’s been important for me to constantly put things into perspective and find the silver lining. It’s work, and it’s not easy to do in those moments when emotions spring up, but it’s better than the alternative, allowing my brain to take that nosedive into an abyss of negativity and anxiety.

Emotions are not who you are, they are simply tools for survival and learning how to wield those tools will benefit the happiest and saddest moments of your life.

“I don’t want to be at the mercy of my emotions. I want to use them, to enjoy them, and to dominate them.”
