There is one 5 letter word that isn’t exactly among my favorites, mostly due to its overuse throughout the pandemic. Can you guess what it is?
The word is: pivot.
But regardless of my feelings towards the word, adapting to situations through pivoting is a constant requirement for business owners.
This applies whether we’re facing a global pandemic or unexpected rain on your wedding day. Embracing the ability to transition into unforeseen circumstances and making the most of them stands as a crucial skill for excelling in business, be it as a restaurant owner navigating challenges or simply as an individual striving to stay afloat.
Those moments when everything’s going sideways, that’s when you find out who you really are. Life’s got more twists and turns than a roller coaster, and I’ve figured out that setting super strict expectations can lead to disappointment when unforeseen events trigger a roadblock and hinder my ability to pivot.
The unexpected hurdles that drop in our laps? Yeah, they’re a thing. And they demand snap decisions that can leave you feeling like you’re hanging by a thread.
Not gonna lie, these decisions can be scary stuff. You’re staring down the barrel of a problem, and there’s no GPS telling you the way out.
Unfortunately, these curveballs tend to be the norm rather than the exception. Even if the result isn’t always picture-perfect, I know that, at that particular moment, I’m giving it my absolute best effort.
It’s easy to look back and beat yourself up over choices you’ve made in the past, but granting yourself the grace of understanding that you, and everyone, is perpetually giving it their best is essential for a good night rest.
