1.2.3. The Risks of Normalizing Drug and Alcohol Abuse In The Restaurant Industry

Hey, it’s Alex,

Alcohol and the service industry often seem to go hand in hand, sometimes enabling each other in ways that can be a detriment to oneself, the team, and the business.

It’s easy to overlook problematic behavior or give repeated chances, especially when someone is exceptionally skilled and it feels dire looking for new hires.

However, this leniency can hinder growth and affect team dynamics.

Other team members might face stricter standards compared to someone who shows up hungover or even drunk. It’s unsettling how such behavior can become normalized in this environment.

From my experience with drug and alcohol issues in this industry, the best approach is to address the problem immediately.

Regardless of how talented or well-justified the individual might be, such behavior is likely to recur and poses significant risks to the team, the individual, and the business as a whole.

Here’s a glimpse from inside the pizza case. We’ve been tinkering with our dough recipe, and it’s progressing nicely. In fact, I don’t think I’ve stopped tweaking it since 2015!
