1.2.3. The Different Versions of Ourselves

Hey, it’s Alex,

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how honest people are with each other—and with themselves.

Honesty is such a valuable virtue, but when someone opens up too much, it’s often seen as a weakness or looked down upon. Honesty can be upsetting and in some cases get people in trouble. I came across a quote that said, “If you can’t be your honest self, be somebody else.” With social media, that’s become so easy to do—whether it’s in the way people present their lives, or their businesses.

Do you ever catch yourself holding back or softening your true feelings in conversations, just to keep the peace or make others feel comfortable? It’s not easy to stay 100% real in business or in life. Sometimes, it feels like no one is truly living authentically because we’re all wearing different versions of ourselves to fit the moment.

In the end, intentions are everything. With our interpersonal relationships, our actions or even the food we cook. Everything we do could be misunderstood, but I guess as long as we’re true to what we mean and honest with ourselves, that’s what counts. Be yourself.

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
