1.2.3. Lessons in Growth: Preschool Wisdom & Restaurant Shows

Hey, it’s Alex–

My son recently turned four, and every day I see him growing—not just physically, but in the words and sentences he’s learning to put together, and the new things he’s attempting on his own.

It’s one of the most special gifts to witness someone growing right before your eyes.

At 39, I notice how people around me often seem set in their ways. But children have this incredible curiosity that gives them a superpower to experience things in their purest form, without much judgment. I constantly try to tap into this curiosity that my son and his friends have.

As he’s growing up, he’s started school, which has been a significant change. I never really loved school after kindergarten, so I understand his hesitation. Watching him face these changes with raw emotion reminds me of the times I’ve gone through significant changes myself.

As adults, we often bottle up our emotions and anxieties or turn to other methods that don’t truly help us cope with whatever the change may be. Sometimes I feel like curling up in my wife’s arms and crying to her about not wanting to do something, but I remind myself that I’ll be better for it once it’s over.

Just like Levi, who struggled at the gate this morning, I know from what I’ve been told that he has a wonderful time every day at school.

Often, the hardest part is just walking through the gate. I’m thankful for the example he sets and challenge everyone to be a little more curious, a little more gentle, and a little more open to something different this week.

“Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning.” — William Arthur Ward

I had a fantastic time earlier this week at the California Restaurant Show. I had the opportunity to give a seminar on culture to a packed crowd—the same presentation I’ll be taking to Atlanta next week! I was also fortunate enough to take home 2nd place in the California Cheese Pizza competition with our Vodka pie. It was an incredible experience!

Love, crust, and pizza dust,
