1.2.3. Checklists Put a Man on the Moon

Hey, it’s Alex,

Lately, I’ve been considering what I deem the most crucial tool in the restaurant.

I could argue that a checklist takes that prize,  because the power of a checklist should never be underestimated, but at an even closer consideration I realized there’s a tool in my restaurant that makes my checklists even more powerful (and sturdy too).

My laminator.

I laminate all the restaurant’s checklists and distribute them throughout the establishment.

There’s something about a laminated piece of paper that elevates it above just a piece of paper with some ink on it.

This practice fosters accountability and offers clear guidance for my team.

I find them personally beneficial as well.

Having consistent guidelines ensures that everyone is aligned and operating on the same page, LITERALLY.

It took me some time to fully grasp the significance of a checklist.

For years, I may have assumed that people could anticipate my thoughts or remember instructions after hearing them once. However, that’s simply not realistic.

In my opinion, the checklist serves as the foundation that solid restaurant process and policy is based on which keeps the team united.

“The checklist is one of the most powerful tools for achieving our goals. It transforms abstract intentions into concrete actions.”
